Basilica di San Francesco was inaugurated in 1228. In 1230 there were the remains of St. Francis buried. The building is composed of two churches, one above the other. The upper church is of Gothic aspect. Entrance to the lower one is through Gothic portal of the 13th century. The walls of the Basilica was decorated with works and frescos cycles by great Italian Masters. Among the famous are Cimabue (NEW TESTAMENT scenes), Giotto , Pietro Lorenzetti. |
