Ravenna was probably inhabited by  Umbrian's  and later by Etruscans. There is, evidence in the 2nd century B. C. a  large part  of  Po  Valley was colonized by Roma and Ravenna become a Roman city.

   

The most important period of Ravenna's history began in 402, when it become the capital of the Western Empire. The year 476 marked the end of the Western Roman Empire and the barbarian king Odoacer proclaimed himself king of Italy, choosing Ravenna as his royal seat.

   

In Ravenna died at the age of 56 - just finishing  Paradiso- during the night of September 13 and 14, 1321 Dante. He was invited there by prince Guido Novello da  Polenta in 1318.   <<  Monument erected in memory  of  Dante restored  between 1933 and  1936. 

 
   

Piazza del Popolo is the square in the city centre, surrounded by interesting historical buildings. 
Palazzo del Commune - rebuilt in 1681.
Two columns erected by the Venetian Republic in 1481.

San Francesco - a simple church with a brick facade built in the 15th century and dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul.

S. Maria in Porto - a church designed by Bernando Tavella in the 16th century. The lavish facade is made of Istria stone and marble.

Battistero degli ortodossi is the oldest of Ravenna's ancient monuments and was begun towards the late 4th century or early 5th century when Bishop Orso  set to the work cathedral. The Baptistery is the simple brick construction with four large niches spreading out from from the centre.
