The Church was originally consecrated by  Ambrose - Bishop of Milan  in 393.  The Romanesque church was constructed around the year 1000. Designed between 1421 - 1446  by Brunelleschi. Although the project was not finished until 1460 by Brunelleschi´s pupil - Antonio Manetti, Michelangelo too, commissioned by his Medici patrons, worked on the great church. He designed the facade which however, was never carried out.
