To have seen Italy without having been Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything ( Goethe)

Human habitation dates from early 9th - 7th millennium BC. (Sesioti, a people native Africa left evidence of their settlement) .
Greeks arrived in waves in the 8th century BC and settled on the eastern coasts of island.  With Greek domination began in fact
for the island a period of high artistic expression. Outstanding examples are Temple of Apollo, Theatre of Syracuse and the theatre of Taormina. Greek colonization 8th - 3rd century BC began on the continent - precisely on the Tyrrhenian and Ionian costs. This Great territory is known as the MAGNA GRAECIA.
ROMAN DOMINATION - Sicilian art did not change substantially.  Many of Greeks theatres were destructed to meet the needs of Roman's spectacles. (Greek theatre in Taormina) .
In Syracuse has been built second as to size and seating capacity.
Evidence of the new trend is mostly seen in country
side (Roman's villas) and in the luxurious private residences.
With downfall of the Western Roman Empire (476 AD Romulus Augustulus, the last Roman emperor in the West is deposed). the new world of ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION play an important historical role.
